Government and industry collaboration will see New Zealand as the first country in the world where all three mobile network operators will share radio access network equipment and one set of antennae on each facility built by the Rural Connectivity Group.

The Rural Broadband Initiative Phase Two and the Mobile Black Spot Fund (RBI2/MBSF) aims to provide high-speed broadband to the greatest possible number of rural users and improve mobile on state highways and at key visitor destinations.

The Rural Connectivity Group is an independent entity that has been established by New Zealand’s three Mobile Network Operators (MNOs), to build mobile infrastructure in partnership with CIP under the RBI2/MBSF.

Mobile and wireless broadband services will be available from all three mobile companies, meaning rural Kiwis can look forward to a compet-itive retail environment with multiple companies offering great value deals and different services.

Government and industry collaboration will see New Zealand as the first country in the world where all three mobile network operators will share radio access network equipment and one set of antennae on each facility built by the Rural Connectivity Group. Retail services on the infrastructure will be provided by the three mobile network operators.

What will RCG deliver?
  • new mobile and wireless broadband coverage to at least 70,000 rural homes and businesses (including some commercial coverage provided by the mobile operators)
  • mobile coverage to a further 1000 kilometres of state highways
  • connectivity to around 100 top New Zealand tourist destinations by December 2022.
