Rural Connectivity Group

Government and industry collaboration will see New Zealand as the first country in the world where all three mobile network operators will share radio access network equipment and one set of antennae on each facility built by the Rural Connectivity Group.

The Rural Broadband Programme and the Mobile Black Spots Programme aim to provide high-speed broadband to the greatest possible number of rural homes and businesses to improve mobile coverage on state highways and at key tourism locations

The Rural Connectivity Group is an independent entity that has been established by New Zealand’s three Mobile Network Operators (MNOs), to build mobile infrastructure in partnership with CIP under the Rural Broadband and Mobile Blackspots programme.

Mobile and wireless broadband services will be available from all three mobile companies, meaning rural Kiwis can look forward to a competitive retail environment with multiple companies offering great value deals and different services.

Government and industry collaboration will see New Zealand as the first country in the world where all three mobile network operators will share radio access network equipment and one set of antennae on each facility built by the Rural Connectivity Group. Retail services on the infrastructure will be provided by the three mobile network operators.

What will RCG deliver?
  • new mobile and wireless broadband coverage to at least 83,800 rural homes and businesses (including some commercial coverage provided by the mobile operators)
  • mobile coverage to a further 1,400 km of State Highways by December 2024.
  • Connectivity to around 160 top New Zealand tourist destinations
